ARKET’s mission is to democratise quality through accessible, well-made, durable products, designed to be used and loved for a long time. Whilst you might recognise ARKET as a clothing store, they have gained a reputation in fresh Scandinavian homeware design, from their playfully bold soft furnishings to their simple yet sculptural vases.
The collaboration between ARKET and Swedish artist and illustrator Linnéa Andersson is just one example. Andersson's signature motifs of sinuous branch and leaf textures feature on weighty linen-weave cushions and warm lambswool blankets in a handful of colour combinations. The blankets sold out quickly but have just come back in stock!
ARKET's range of terracotta and glass vases and pots exemplify thoughtful design. I love the green Serax plant pot with a textured surface and gradient glazing and the statement Ridge vases made of terracotta with a tonal ridge design.
Focusing on brand mission, I want to talk about the sustainability that is deeply ingrained in ARKET's design philosophy. Sustainability is not going to stop being a buzzword any time soon and I am interested in what companies do to pay more than lipservice to it! In the case of ARKET, a few things stand out to me:
1) Their in-store recycling initiative where customers can bring in clothing, shoes and home textiles from any brand in any condition or their ARKET packaging to be recycled and receive 10% off their next purchase - ideal for those of us going through a Marie Kondo decluttering phase
2) Their investment in research and development to make products with a longer life includes studying vintage garments and the development of custom yarns
3) Their focus on explaining how to care for their products to prolong their lifespan
